Swapping stuff

I am guessing that many people are like me and have a lot of stuff that can be used to make other stuff, but still always seem to need even more stuff.

PROPOSAL: MHV host a swap ‘day’ to enable members (and others?) to swap stuff.

DISCUSSION:
There are many ways this could be run and organised, and plenty of precedent in swap meets aorund that could be used to set how this might work.

The hosting organisation could/should ask for a donation from attendees, either in cash or possibly a selective item donation - ie host has say over acceptability of proposed item, or cash and of course the host sets the rules!

The swapping could also just be handled online, for example in this forum, but that is less fun than a live swap and can also get messy with items still being listed after being swapped etc.

I am sure that a lot of swapping and even gifting does already happen in MHV and other spaces, but that is less efficient and haphazard as it depends on the serendipity of meeting the right person etc.

Of course swapping stuff for free is not the only way stuff can be exchanged, but it is suggested that this be the primary aim to set a more friendly non-commercial attitude.

My ideal would be a more global swap system, possibly even involving sneaker net transport, but given potential issues with ‘undesirable’ stuff being added to a shipment, a ‘trustable’ global swap system is a fairly big challenge.

  • current project - need to drill small holes accurately - think PCB drilling size & accuracy, so need:

    • CNC, or just high speed spindle & controller (10k+ RPM)
    • can be working or in need of repair, can use own drill

    OR linear shaft and bearings - prefer 12 or 10mm, ~500mm x2 to start…
    AND BALL SCREW linear threaded rod and fittings

    OR scrappable flat bed scanners, preferably larger A3 size for parts to create above

  • perspex - even small offcuts 3, 2.5, 2mm, prefer clear, but any color for tests.

  • IR reflow oven - in the future

  • Pick & Place - in the future
