Indie Games Showcase at You Are Here Festival

Hi All,

I’m new to the forum, Adam Thomas gave me the link. I’m one of the Producers for You Are Here festival that Adam also works for as a photographer. I’m writing with some information about the Indie Games Showcase that I’m putting together for the festival that you might be interested in or keen to be involved in.

For those not familiar, You Are Here is an experimental arts festival designed to showcase emerging creative communities in Canberra. We’ve been around for 5 years now and this year’s festival runs for 5 days from 18-22 March. Most of our events appear in a variety of venues including vacant shopfronts, pubs, cafes, museums, laneways and arts centres. The festival features all kinds of artists and creative communities, from theatre makers and visual artists to cross disciplinary artists trying to work across boundaries and find new ways of collaborating.

So why an indie games showcase? Well, late last year we were approached by a collective from Melbourne called CTRL_Coda: www.ctrlcoda.com. They were working on a project which brought together games developers, designers, musicians, architects and other creatives to create games which explored the possibilities of cross disciplinary collaboration and experimentation in games development.

This got us thinking that maybe we should see what is going on in Canberra’s indie games scene and so that’s when I got in touch with Seb Perri at Academy for Interactive Entertainment and went along to Pixels and Pizza - and there’s clearly a lot going on! So the main idea behind the showcase is to reach out to the indie games development community, and see what we can do to support them/you by providing a space and a time to showcase what people are working on to an audience that might be a bit different to the usual punters, as well as create links with other creatives, illustrators, designers, visual artists etc who are working in Canberra. We’ll also be running an informal forum at 3pm to chat with CTRL_Coda and some local gamers about indie games and experimentation/collaboration.

If a few people from MHV were keen to bring along anything they’ve been working on that is at least somehow games or interactivity related then I could allocate a table for you to share. If you could let me know by replying to this post and I’ll take it from there.

Okay, that’s all from me for the moment. Any questions? Shoot.
