Announcement: Canberra Functional Programming Group - CanFP

Hi all,

I wanted to let you know about a new community group we’ve started, hosted by NICTA – the Canberra Functional Programming Group - CanFP. I know there’s plenty of programmers at MHV, so hopefully you’ll find the talks and company interesting.

The group is aimed at programmers and developers from all backgrounds, using any language, with any level of experience who have an interest in functional programming.

If you’ve ever wondered what the buzz Scala is all about, how you can make your JavaScript easier to maintain, or just want to learn new ways of thinking about problems, CanFP is for you.

Details of the first meeting are:

When: June 24th, 6:45pm
Where: NICTA seminar room, ground floor, 7 London Circuit, Canberra City
Who: Anyone and everyone interested in programming
Cost: Free!
RSVP: http://www.meetup.com/CanFPG/ (so we have enough pizza)
Contact: If you have any questions, email me at Alexander.Mason@nicta.com.au or use the discussion board at meetup.com

Meetings will be held monthly, proudly hosted by NICTA, who will also be providing free pizza and refreshments.

Myself and David Peterson will be giving the first talks (topics to be decided - check : http://www.meetup.com/CanFPG/ closer to the date), but we’ll also be having a lightning talk session at the end of the night. If you’d like to give a 5-10 minute talk about anything to do with programming, be it something you’ve learned or a problem you’re having and want some advice, let me know and we’ll add you to the list.

To make this thing a success, we need people to give talks - no topic is too boring, trivial or complex, and no language is off limits, so stick your hand up and volunteer. It’s really not that hard (and everyone is really friendly). I’ll be putting up a list of interesting papers and blog posts people might want to use to base a talk on at meetup.com in the coming days. There will be at least one beginner-level talk each meeting.

Everyone is welcome so forward this to your friends and colleagues.

We hope to see you there!
