UPDATE 2015-10-22: Laser Cutter - we have ordered a Glowforge

AWESOME! use this link for an extra $100 off  http://glowforge.com/referred/?kid=BqP4Q0

Itā€™s such a good investment, I hope you guys go through with it! use this link for an extra $100 off  http://glowforge.com/referred/?kid=BqP4Q0

I have to say, it really concerns me the number of linkspam bots associated with the Glowforge discount.

Sorry to hear that :frowning: just trying to help! Definitely not a botā€¦ Are you, Gir?

Your account was created only a few minutes before your first post, regarding glowforge discount, and then you double-posted the same thing again.

Iā€™ve been spammed on twitter to take discount referrals from random people there as well.

Makes me wonder about the legitimacy of the entire company, but Iā€™m not seeing many people terribly worried about it so what the hellā€¦

Gotta vent that they are 160 times oversubscribed, I guess we have plenty of time to clean up and find space for it

Yeah, thatā€™s a worry. Even if we donā€™t see ours until June next year I still think itā€™s more progress than weā€™ll get doing what weā€™re doing currently.

In the event that itā€™s a total scam and Iā€™m responsible for burning $4k worth of member funds, I hope to make it up to you all by writing a proposal for and winning a stronger communities grant February next yearā€¦

Also, @kristinfaus, if you really are just a well-intentioned human, apologies for my cynicism - Iā€™ve been dealing with fake invoice and fake adword scams etc. In recent months.

In the meantime, I am keen to hear more about how closely tied Glowfirge is to their ā€œcloud basedā€ motion processor. The ADSL at the space is crappy and latency to Australia is crappier. So I hope this doesnā€™t result in burnt materials and burnt out lasers!

Fair enough, I apologize for offending and/or annoying you. I was stoked to use a referral link to get a discount on mine so I was just trying to spread the love

Itā€™s been purchased. I didnā€™t feel comfortable using the email-address trick kindly offered by @M0les, and I clean forgot to try @kristinfausā€™s URL. So although we got the 50% discount, erm, I somehow managed to miss out on an easy further $100 discount.

If this does present a problem, I am confident we can overcome itā€¦ I have some more things to try, I just need to actually try them.

AFAICT Thatā€™s not a discount referral URL, itā€™s your personal URL for tracking the progress of your referral discount (IIRC, as more people signed-up for updates from your referral, your discount would increase by $50-ish each one). The referral programā€™s now ended, so you can nolonger track/increase the referral bonus.

The referral bonus only takes effect if you enter your subscribed email address on the purchase page. To see this in action, go to the glowforge purchase page and enter my subscription address ā€œglowforge@snubdomainā€ (Or use your own one, if you have one) - You donā€™t have to fill any other fields or complete the order, just focus away from the email address field and the $-100 discount magically pops-up.

In other words, the referral program allowed people who signed-up others for email updates ahead of the launch to get a discount on their own purchase. Unlike other referral programes, those referred got no discount and the referrer got no direct cut of referrees payments (e.g. like Amazon affiliates).

Ah, I see. Though the E-mail confirmation I got does say regarding our URL: ā€œIf you share this link with a friend and they too buy a Glowforge, theyā€™ll get a sweet $100 off.ā€.

Who knows. I just hope they ship the damn thing

When I mentioned our ADSL situation on twitter they said they will be working on a low bandwidth and fault tolerant mode. They also said the bandwidth requirements are pretty low so we could, theoretically, have that particular machine connected to the CBR Free Wifi once the Belco APs get lit up.

They have also said there will be a GPLed firmware ready on release that wont depend on the cloud software. Worst case, we just use it like any old gcode/hpgl CNC machine and join in on building/using the inevitable fat client that will spring up.
