Friday evening tech talk videos - who is interested

Me too, but I will be a bit late.

@brenda thanks for organising the evening it was good.

And to all that were there, good discussion.

Was a good night! Thankyou all. Looking forward to next week. And reading
more about various encryption technologies.

For those who couldn’t make it tonight we watched:

Reconstructing narratives - transparency in the service of justice by Jacob Appelbaum and Laura Poitras

followed by Let’s Encrypt by Seth Schoen.

We had a good discussion about the first video. A bit less about the second one, partly because it ran quite late.

For next week it was suggested we try using the workshop room downstairs so people can work on things while having the video running, so we’ll give that a try. The big table should also make the discussion easier.

We also thought we’d watch one or two videos during the week at home and start with a discussion of those before watching a different one together. I’d like to suggest continuing with one or two of the journalism/encryption ones:

  1. Crypto Tales from the Trenches by Nadia Heninger, Julia Angwin, Laura Poitras and Jack Gillum
  2. Doing right by sources, done right by Sarah Harrison and gracefire

What do others think? There are lots of other good talks so I’m happy for others to suggest alternatives.

Any suggestions for what video to watch next week?

Who can make it on Friday? Will you have a chance to watch the two videos before Friday?

Anyone got a video they would like to watch on the evening?

I’m planning to be there
Will have the videos watched.

I can be there, though I think there’s very little chance I’ll have time to
watch the videos beforehand, so I may skip this one or come late.

So will the space be open tomorrow? Would you guys mind if I came in and did some stuff in the tool/workshop room?

Yes, the space will be open. I’m planning to go in at about 2pm and stay for the evening. You are welcome to work in the tool room. We are thinking of using the table in the larger workshop.

Hey @Talsidor - Just thought I’d give you a quick ping to say that I didn’t really get a chance to watch the videos either. If you’re free tonight, you should come anyway!

Exhausted from my crazy week but I’ll definitely consider it, thanks!

No worries - see you Sunday regardless

We now have a working TV (thanks Jason!). Would people be interested in reviving these tech talk nights?

Does Friday night work, or should we try a different night?

Does anyone have any preference for what you would like to watch?

I was thinking of running these maybe once a fortnight or month.

I’d be happy to watch conference videos - there seems to be an endless supply of them, and even recommendations/lists of highly watchable ones. I know there are some memorable ones I’ve seen that I’d recommend. Extra bonus: most are licensed CC or similar which means they can be easily shown in a public space.

However, that’s a parallel universe version of me that has time to hang out watching con videos  I think I’m best placed to making sure the space is open every Tuesday, but I’ll try to tag along every now and then for video night when I can.

Yes please! I’ve been too absent for too long, and it would be great to get
these going again.

Cheers,
Kevin

What would parallel universe version of Paul suggest?

I’m aware that what I like in conference videos may not be to everyone’s taste

It’d be great of you could make it to some conf video screenings Kevin

Did you have anything you think we should watch?

I really enjoy good technical talks - but the good ones I’ve seen haven’t been memorable enough that I can easily find them again. Balint Seeber gives good SDR talks. Currently I’m really interested in functional programming and kernel hardening/exploit mitigations right now. Oh - for non-technical, one of the most memorable I think has been ā€œDEF CON 21 - Mudge - Unexpected Stories From a Hacker Inside the Governmentā€

Hi everyone, this Friday @ MHV 2 talks will be screening at 7pm. I’m starting off with something less technical just to get the ball rolling.

The talks we’ll be watching are:

Come along to watch and chat

(I will also kick off a 3d print for the MHV Space Station project)
