Apr 05, 2016 06:30PM: Tuesday Maker Meet - SatNOGS build & AO-7/XW-2 VHF listening attempts

Last week, thanks mostly to @mbainrot and @Paul_Buckley we rushed to build and test a “junk yard wars” 3-element VHF Yagi antenna that worked surprisingly well (see below). This week, we’ll try to use it to listen to amateur radio satellites AO-7 (hopefully its B transponder will be active on ~145.950MHz) and the various XW-2 (~145MHz) sats. Semi real-time status of these spacecraft can be found at AMSAT OSCAR Satellite Status

We had some confusion getting our bearings right last week, so here’s the times of the passes predicted for Tuesday 05 April during normal MHV opening times:
• AO-7: 18:51 Az. 178°, 19:01 Az. 235° (Max. alt. 20.8°), 19:10 Az. 295°
• XW-2A: 19:01 Az. 150°, 19:06 Az. 278° (Max. alt. 19.6°), 19:11 Az. 017°
• XW-2F: 19:35 Az. 173°, 19:40 Az. 254° (Max. alt. 60.3°), 19:46 Az. 340°
• XW-2C: 19:49 Az. 254°, 19:55 Az. 254° (Max. alt 37.7°), 20:01 Az. 330°
• XW-2B: 19:51 Az. 179°, 19:57 Az. 253° (Max. alt. 35.4°), 20:03 Az. 329°
• XW-2D: 19:53 Az. 179°, 19:59 Az. 253° (Max. alt. 33.2°), 20:05 Az. 328°

Afterwards, we’ll try some more SatNOGS rotator gearbox assembly using the 3D Printed parts we’ve accumulated so far and some of the stuff that’s arrived from our suppliers.
